The Invitation: Discovering Your Soft Power

Across this short series, I've named the exhaustion so many women carry, and traced it back to what I believe is its true source. Not personal weakness or inferiority or lack of ability, but a mismatch between the fuel women's bodies have evolved to run on and the relentless, masculine model of power that our culture, our workplaces, and family so often hand us instead. Masculine power, our generally accepted model of leadership is Hard Power. It is based on traits such as control, force, fear, reward, dominance, compliance, stoicism, independence, competitiveness and winning
So what's the alternative? I call it Soft Power, and it's the thing I spend most of my working life now teaching women to reclaim.
What I Actually Mean By Soft
The word soft, defined simply, means agreeable, calm, gentle, and yielding. Notice what happens in your body as you read that. Many women flinch a little, because we've been taught, quietly and persistently, that soft means weak.
It doesn't.
Any serious student of martial arts will tell you that the most powerful response to an opponent's force is often not to meet it head on, but to absorb it, to yield, and to turn that same energy back with far greater effect. Softness, in this sense, isn't the absence of strength. It's a different, deeply intelligent expression of it.
There's a second word worth considering here too: power. Its origins trace back to Middle English, where it simply meant to be able. Not dominion. Not control over others. Simply, the ability to do.
So Soft Power, properly understood, isn't about becoming passive or small. It's about becoming able, in a way that's genuinely agreeable with your own inner truth, rather than a version of power that the world has told you to perform.
Soft Power is recognised as collaborative, nurturing, listening, empathetic, supportive, connected, intuitive, patient and accepting
Not One or the Other
This isn't an invitation to abandon your drive, your ambition, or your capacity to push hard when a deadline truly demands it. There's real value in masculine energy, used well and used consciously. It’s exactly what we need in an emergency. The thing is most of us are not in a constant state of emergency, although it often feels like it.
The invitation is towards harmony. Some days call for focus and sheer determination. Other days, and other hours within the very same day, call for rest, restoration, and simply being present with the people you love. No one longs to spend an evening with someone who's still operating at full throttle, unable to soften even when the day's work is done.
We need to be aware of and be able to utilise both soft and hard power. Many of us don't do this and we are the worse off for it, we are only half equipped.
Most of us have quietly diminished our feminine nature for years, believing it to be the weaker half of who we are, to be hidden and denied. It never was, and I have spent a great deal of my career trying to help women see that for themselves.
The Strength Hiding in Plain Sight
In my work, I use five Women's PowerTypes™, each wonderfully feminine, and each genuinely strong in her own right.
The Warrioress, who protects, defends, and stands her ground with fierce clarity.
The Lover, who brings warmth, connection, and deep sensory presence to everything she touches.
The Mother, who nurtures, holds, and creates safety for others to grow.
The Queen, she leads with wisdom, sovereignty, and a steady, grounded authority.
The Sorceress, she works with intuition, transformation, and creative vision beyond the purely logical.
Every woman carries all five within her, though most of us lean naturally towards one or two, often without ever realising it. Learning to recognise, honour, and consciously call upon each of these types is at the heart of building a life that runs on sustainable fuel rather than borrowed adrenaline.
An Invitation, Not a Prescription
I'm not here to tell you that you must be calm and yielding at every moment of every day. That would simply be trading one rigid rule for another. What I'm inviting you to consider is far gentler than that. Simply the possibility that there's a form of power more suited to who you truly are, one that doesn't require you to override your own biology in order to be taken seriously.
This is precisely what I created Start Flourishing to teach. I guide women through discovering their own Soft Power and their own PowerTypes™, so they can finally work and live in a way that feels sustainable, quite possibly for the very first time. This isn't because they were failing before, but because the environment they were operating in was never designed with them in mind.
If any part of this series has felt like it was speaking directly to you, that quiet sense of recognition is worth honouring. You're not alone in this, and you're certainly not beyond help. There's a different kind of power waiting for you, one that feels like coming home rather than another mountain to climb.
I have a 10 minute quiz that you can complete online. This will tell you how much access you have to these PowerTypes™ now and how they show up in your life. You receive a report straight away by email
